Sunbeam Road is one of Jacksonville’s key east-west connectors, running roughly 2.4 miles between Philips Highway (US-1) and San Jose Boulevard on the city’s Southside. The History of Sunbeam Road
The land around Sunbeam Road was once largely rural: farms, pine forests, and open acreage stretching across Jacksonville’s southern edge. Development stayed limited until the late twentieth century, when Interstate 295 and the Buckman Bridge opened up much easier access to the Southside.
As Jacksonville grew, residential neighborhoods, schools, churches, and commercial centers gradually replaced the agricultural landscape. Sunbeam Road became a working connector between those communities while keeping direct access to the region’s major highways.
One notable chapter: the Sunbeam Road Landfill operated west of Philips Highway from the early 1970s into the 1980s. Since its closure, the site has been undergoing a genuinely significant transformation. The City has been converting roughly 100 acres of the former landfill into a multi-use recreation destination, with plans for biking and running trails, a dog park, a market space, and pickleball courts. It’s one of the more interesting adaptive-reuse projects on the Southside and a preview of how much more green space is coming to the corridor.
Today, Sunbeam Road reflects that same pattern: steady growth paired with real effort to preserve access to natural areas and nearby historic neighborhoods.
