History of San Jose Country Club
The club’s roots trace back to January 1925, when the San Jose Estates Company purchased roughly 1,000 acres along the St. Johns River, hiring noted city planner John Nolen to design an upscale suburban community with its own hotel, country club, churches, and shops. Architect Harold Saxelbye designed the clubhouse, and Donald Ross designed the 18-hole golf course, both completed around the same time in the mid-1920s to serve guests of the San Jose Hotel.
The hotel venture didn’t survive, and the golf course and clubhouse operated as a semiprivate facility for years before closing in 1946, when the property was acquired by Stockton, Whatley, Davin & Co. In 1947, the club was reorganized as the private, member-owned San Jose Country Club it is today, a transition in ownership and status rather than a rebuild of the clubhouse itself, which still stands from the 1920s. Over the decades since, the club has continued to evolve through renovations, including a $300,000 update in the mid-1960s and a $9 million renovation launched in 2019, while preserving its historic character.
