History of the Site
Major William Webb bought the 31-acre riverfront property in 1873 and built the farmhouse that still stands today, completed in 1875, along with a barn and a 1,000-foot dock into the St. Johns River. Walter Jones, who ran the Mandarin Store and Post Office, moved his family into the homestead in the early 1900s, and Jones family members lived there until 1992, giving the property its name.
During the late 1800s, Mandarin’s economy centered on citrus. Orange groves covered much of the landscape, and the St. Johns River served as the main trade route linking Mandarin to Jacksonville and the rest of Florida. Devastating freezes in the 1890s ended that citrus boom, but Mandarin continued to grow, and much of its historic character survived. Walter Jones Historical Park now keeps that history visible through its restored buildings and ongoing educational programs.
