Sunbeam Road: Past & Present
Before becoming the bustling commercial connector it is today, the land along Sunbeam Road was largely rural covered by pine forests, small farms, and open pastures along Jacksonville’s southern boundary. Suburban development rapidly accelerated in the late 20th century with the opening of Interstate 295 and the Buckman Bridge, turning agricultural plots into thriving residential neighborhoods, schools, and business hubs.
- Local History Note: West of Philips Highway, the Sunbeam Road Landfill operated from the early 1970s into the 1980s. Today, the City of Jacksonville is actively revitalizing this ~100-acre site into a major multi-use recreation destination featuring biking trails, running paths, a dog park, market space, and pickleball courts, a prime example of local adaptive reuse.

Walter Jones Historical Park
Situated along the scenic St. Johns River at 11964 Mandarin Road, this 31-acre property was Jacksonville’s very first historical park. Opened in 2000, it preserves a riverfront homestead that anchored the Mandarin community for over a century.
Originally purchased in 1873 by Major William Webb, the land was acquired in the early 1900s by Walter Jones—owner of the historic Mandarin Store and Post Office—whose family lived on the property until 1992.

- Historic Structures: The 1875 Webb-Jones Farmhouse, an 1876 barn, an 1892 log cabin winery, and the 1898 St. Joseph’s Mission Schoolhouse for African American Children.

San Jose Country Club
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, San Jose Country Club has stood as a crown jewel of Southside Jacksonville since the 1920s. Originally designed in 1925 by renowned architect Harold Saxelbye (clubhouse) and legendary golf course architect Donald Ross (18-hole championship course), the club was built to serve guests of the historic San Jose Hotel.
Reorganized in 1947 as a private, member-owned club, it continues to offer world-class amenities including pristine golf, tennis and pickleball courts, a modern fitness center, a resort-style pool, and fine dining.

Goodby's Creek Boat Ramp
Officially known as the John T. Lowe Boat Ramp, this public facility at 9021 San Jose Boulevard provides direct water access to Goodby’s Creek and the St. Johns River.
The site’s rich history traces back to a 1792 Spanish land survey for Francis Goodwin. The City of Jacksonville acquired the 4-acre property in 2002, launching a fully renovated four-lane boat ramp in 2006.

The Avenues Mall
Located conveniently off Interstate 95 and Southside Boulevard, The Avenues Mall has been a premier retail anchor for Jacksonville’s Southside since opening on September 26, 1990. Spanning over 1.12 million square feet, this multi-level indoor shopping destination features over 140 popular retailers, dining options, and seasonal family events.

Greenland Park
Tucked away on Fayal Drive just off Greenland Road, Greenland Park is a vibrant 20.3-acre neighborhood facility serving Southside athletic leagues. Dedicated in 1990 and expanded in 1995, the park features a heart-warming memorial monument to Brandon O’Leary, a beloved local youth athlete.

Alejandro Garces Camp Tomahawk Park
Located just north of San Clerc Road between the San Jose and Beauclerc neighborhoods, this 20-acre passive park offers a peaceful escape into nature. Originally operated in the 1950s as a private day camp by Octavio Garces (a former Bolles School instructor), the land was acquired by the City in 1981 and named in honor of Garces’ father, Alejandro.
Maintained primarily in its natural wooded state per neighborhood wishes, the park features shaded walking trails, a kayak/canoe launch along Goodby’s Creek, picnic shelters, and abundant local wildlife viewing.

Baker Skinner Park
Situated at 7641 Powers Avenue (directly opposite Wolfson High School), Baker Skinner Park is a 24-acre athletic complex acquired in 1994 from the family of pioneer dairyman A.C. Skinner Sr. The park honors both Mr. Skinner and Dick Baker, recipient of the 1993 Northeast Florida Builders Association Leadership Award.
